Definitive Book on the Americas Cup Re Published

When the first print run of Bob Fisher’s definitive history of the America’s Cup sold out, there were disappointed sailing enthusiasts around the globe. Now, with interest mounting in the 34th America’s Cup, publishers Wiley Nautical have announced a new limited print run.

The publishers believe there to be a constant demand for this exceptional work.

The first editions were never available from bookshops or online yet they sold out so quickly that they decided to reprint and make the books available to everyone, everywhere.

The mighty tomes of this two-volume set come in a cloth-bound slip case and will take pride of place on any yachtsman’s coffee table. Yet this is not just a collection of the paintings and photographs that track the cup since its origins in 1851.

Author Bob Fisher has produced an work of staggering breadth and detail. He has had unique access to the archives as well as the men and women who have fought on and off the water to win sailing’s greatest prize.

The print run has been limited to 200 copies, and the size, quality and scarcity of this lavish book is reflected in the recommended price of £250, though bookshops and online stores may offer discounts.

About the book:
The first volume chronicles the Cup from the start of the competition in 1851 through to 1967. Bob Fisher has left no stone unturned in producing an objective and authoritative account of each event. The evolution of the America’s Cup is carefully tracked, with the characters, the designs and the races themselves all sharing centre stage. Just as boat speed must be combined with tactical skill to succeed on the water, so scholarship and carefully crafted prose are united in this exceptional work.

The second volume follows the extraordinary events between 1970 and 2003. There’s the inside story on the court cases and personality clashes as well as the cutting edge designs and thrilling battles between the world’s greatest sailors.

The tale is told up to the 32rd America’s Cup which marked the end of an era and the returning of the cup to Europe for the first time in 152 years.

This fully illustrated title includes the paintings and artwork that recorded the action of the first cups as well as some of the finest photography from subsequent years. It all combines to create an achievement that is breathtaking in both its breadth and detail.

The two volumes, each of more than 260 pages, are presented in an elegant cloth-bound slip case, making this a work that will be treasured for generations to come.

About the author:
Bob Fisher is the world authority on the America’s Cup. He has unrivalled access to both the archives and the multi-millionaires who continue to pursue the cup with a passion. He is yachting correspondent for the Guardian and Observer and writes for sailing magazines worldwide. He is a former chairman of the Yachting Journalists Association. The St. Lucia Ministry of Tourism Announces Major Strides in Growth For The Country’s Yachting Sector

In a bid to help stimulate growth and development in St. Lucia’s yachting sector, the St. Lucia Tourist Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has announced that all new revised policies have been approved by its government.

Several proposals presented by St Lucia Marina Director Cuthbert Didier have been sanctioned and will facilitate clearing in and out of the country, as well as an ease on taxation and many other added benefits to encourage cruising in its waters.

These changes will greatly improve and support yachting for private and charter yachts wishing to cruise St. Lucian waters as well as those wishing to conduct yachting business in the country.

Some of the changes include the following:
  • Yachtsmen will now be permitted to stay in St. Lucia waters for 6 months
  •  Yachts with owners temporarily on island will be allowed to remain in the state free of duties and taxes for up to 3 years, after which they will become payable on current value
o   100% waiver of import duty and tax on yachts imported into Saint Lucia
o   100% waiver on income tax from operations for the first 5 years for local charter companies with a minimum of 1 captain and 3 crew members, and has a fleet of 3 or more power or sailing vessels
  •  Approval has been given for the formation of a Yachting Committee, that falls under the purview of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and will incorporate all relevant institutions that function to regulate the yachting sector in St. Lucia

  •  100% waiver of import duty and consumption tax on boat safety equipment and watercraft activity equipment, which includes sport fishing, SCUBA diving, kite surfing and other water sports, subject to verification of the Bill of Quantities by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation for 5 years from date of cabinet conclusion

  • 100% waiver of import duty and consumption tax on all equipment and materials imported or purchased locally for use  in the establishment of infrastructure to service yachts over period of 5 years, subject to verification and approval of the Bill of Quantities by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation

  • The Government of Saint Lucia has waived the visa requirements for Russian and Australian nationals so that Russian and Australian nationals no longer require visas to enter Saint Lucia
These great efforts by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and the Government of St. Lucia to foster yachting in the state will likely trickle down to other businesses in the country, leading to even further economic growth within the country. “This crucial change benefits everyone in the yachting industry, from owners to crew, charter guests and yacht businesses as well as residents of the island itself. We have been working on implementing these changes for some time, and anticipate great results for all involved,” says Didier.

As part of ongoing support to the development and growth of yachting in St. Lucia, IGY Marinas works closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, St. Lucia Tourist Board and the Saint Lucia Government and applauds them on this far-reaching effort that will greatly impact the industry and serve as a model for other countries to emulate.

Eilean – A Classic Yacht a New Book About the Rebirth of the Officine Panerai Yacht

Found rotting in a mangrove swamp Eilean is a Bermudian ketch that has been lovingly restored.

She is one of the last designs by William Fife III who, at the Fife shipyards in Fairlie, Scotland.

Now the Italian watchmaker Officine Panerai has arranged for a book to be published that details how this assignment was accomplished

“Eilean – A Classic Yacht” is the title of a new book devoted to the story of a 1936 yacht salvaged from deterioration, faithfully restored and returned to the sea.

Officine Panerai, the Italian luxury watch company has long historical associations with the sea and the Italian Navy and has been safeguarding and promoting the classic yacht culture over many years.

Fife shipyards in Fairlie, Scotland, created many of the most beautiful sail boats that can still be found at sea. Through first-hand accounts, archives, technical sheets and splendid vintage images, the book recounts Eilean’s birth, her first years sailing in Europe, Atlantic crossings and the glorious years spent in the Caribbean seas when she became recognisable world-wide as the yacht featured in the Duran Duran Rio video in 1982.

Officine Panerai discovered Eilean in English Harbour, Antigua in 2006, in an extremely poor condition, and took her back to Viareggio, Italy to be faithfully restored.  Restoration took over three years and is illustrated in the book with a wide selection of images.

Now that Eilean has finally been returned to her element, the sea, and can be admired during the regattas of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the international circuit of regattas reserved for classic and vintage yachts, which is featured in one chapter of the book.

“Eilean – A Classic Yacht”, published by Flammarion and on sale in an exclusive selection of international bookshops at £80/€95/US$125.

It is written by François Chevalier – naval architect and restorer of vintage yachts, not to mention a highly celebrated journalist, illustrator and writer - and May Fife Kohn, a descendant of the founder of the Fife shipyards and author of the book “Fast and Bonnie: History of William Fife and Sons, Yachtbuilders”.

Enhanced by an elegant presentation box, the book measures 32 cm x 32 cm and has 192 pages

Kingship’s Essence 42.5m

One of the many new projects to be unveiled at the recent Monaco Yacht Show was Essence 42.5m from Kingship.

The Hong Kong based yacht builder, is the first in Asia specializing in constructing large yachts with steel hulls and aluminium superstructures.  It is also the first yard to build a yacht in compliance with Lloyds and MCA in Asia.

Kingship current series includes the Ocean SUV Series, Green Voyager 144’ and the DS156 and the new yacht builds upon that pedigree.

She is the first yacht of her size to have a completely private Master Deck and a 360 degree forward-facing balcony.  The full-beam master’s suite together with the low windows, sliding roof and its own balcony offers not only the best view but does so in absolute privacy.  The aft sundeck could be shared with guest at the discretion of the owner.

Plans for the concept show that onboard space has been fully utilised and maximised to guarantee owners and guests a comfortable cruising experience.

With the bridge located on the main deck, the captain could efficiently operate and manage docking and tender launching.

The bridge is also connected directly to the galley and crew mess which allows delivery of quality services.

Tender and launching systems beneath the huge sun lounges on the foredeck facilitate easy access to watersports.

The 360 degree passageway also reduces the time needed for crew to get around the yacht, and ensures passengers quality and timely services.

The full displacement hull will be powered by twin Caterpillar C32 engines with a cruising speed of 13.5 knots and trans-pacific range.

She accommodates 2 Owners, 8 guests and 8 crews.  She will be built to RINA and will comply with MCA LY2.

Only Watch 2011 Auction Sets New High at Monaco Yacht Show

Forty magnificent timepieces were auctioned raising record prices during the Monaco Yacht Show.

Only Watch is a bi annual auction in which Watchmakers from Switzerland donate fine examples of their craft to benefit research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The auction was held in Monaco at Hotel Hermitage, during the Monaco Yacht Show under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a serious genetic disorder affecting 1 out of every 3,500 boys. It is characterised by a progressive weakening of the muscles, resulting in respiratory and cardiac problems that become fatal as the child gets older. There are around 30,000 sufferers of the disease in Europe alone.

In previous years the time piece from Patek Philippe has set the bench mark reaching the highest price of half a million euros.

The manually wound wristwatch has a minute repeater, Tourbillon escapement, black enamel dial and a stainless steel Patek Philippe prong buckle.

This year the company’s  Genève model, reached a staggering price of 1.4 million euros with telephone bidding open to collectors around the world.

Overall the auction raised € 4,563,000 a huge increase over previous years.

Wider becomes wider

Wider, the company that brought to superyachting the tender that unfolds when at anchor to become a wider floating platform from which guests can dive swim and sunbath, is to have a big sister.

At a gathering at the Monaco Yacht Show, journalists were shown the early foundations of a 46 metre version that has the same ability to unfold sections of the yacht so as to make them more user friendly when at anchor

It is the brainwave of Tilli Antonelli, whose philosophy is based on his fundamental values of passion, creativity, and constant quest for new concepts.

The new yacht is an evolution of the concept, combining top performance innovative design, versatility of guest areas and speed, with extraordinarily low consumption for a yacht of this size.

The stern section unfolds in much the same way as the children's comic characters do in The Transformers.

The space that did house the tender becomes flooded to become an onboard swimming pool and it in turn is surrounded by platforms that offer a beach like effect with the ocean on one side and pool on the other.

Tilli Antonelli, President of Wider, said “this is an event which has been made even more special by our partnership with an exceptional company, Camper & Nicholsons International, who will work as the central agency for the marketing and selling of the product throughout the world.”

“We’re very pleased to have established this partnership with Wider,” said Eric de Saintdo, President and CEO of Camper & Nicholsons International, “and to have the opportunity to represent a yacht throughout the world which has so many of the innovative requirements many large yacht owners will most certainly appreciate.

Captain Paul Bickley Scoops Top Prize

The Fraser Yachts awards dinner is always one of the highlights of the Monaco Yacht Show.

This year was no exception when three top charter yacht Captains took home a bevy of handsome prizes.

Captain Aaron Clark and his crew of Four Wishes along with Captain Robert Wilhelm and his crew of Harmony III each got gourmet hampers, wine and free berthing at Vilanova Grand Marina.

It was however Paul Bickley the Master of Latitude who scooped the Charter Captain of the Year Award winning a Hublot watch hand crafted for him and worth over €3500.

Paul won praise from all his charter guests and from charter brokers and managers at Fraser Yachts.

Earlier in the year his face was seen in all the tabloids when he was pictured being extremely attentive when personally helping one of the worlds besting selling female recording artists in and out of his yachts tenders.

Monaco Show is buzzing with activity

Outside the Principality, the stock market is plunging and the dark clouds of financial doom are again gathering over Europe but here in Monaco, despite the crisis, the sun is shining on the SuperYacht World.

Champagne, cocktails dinners and extravagant press conferences are the order of the day.

One of the most spectacular was that presented by the Italian Boat builder San Lorenzo.

Journalists balanced on stools and listened on translation headphones as Chairman Massimo Perotti  ran through the years facts and figures demonstrating how the company is bucking the trend and performing significantly better than its competitors.

They watched performance and comparative graphs on a huge screen and wrote down quotes that will make headlines elsewhere in the yachting press. Then they were told to watch the screen to see the new SL94 the latest in their long line of superyachts.

The video began the music thumped a beat and then as if by magic the video faded the screen disappeared and there floating at the dock before their very eyes was the new superyacht spirited into position while they were in the conference.

It was a spectacular presentation and nothing short of superyacht theatre at its very best.

Well done San Lorenzo

Burger Boats Becomes Forever Wood Member

During the Monaco Yacht Show the American superyacht builder Burger Boats has become the first official member of  Wood Forever developed by The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

Wood Forever aims to accompany the yacht builders towards the use of timber from sustainably managed forests.

Burger signed a partnership agreement and committed to analyse their wood supply chain in order to be able to develop a sustainable wood purchasing policy and, doing so, fight deforestation.

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco oversaw Burger’s membership during his visit to the Monaco Yacht Show.

His Foundation hopes that the other yacht builders will follow this good example in order to drive the yachting industry towards environmental excellence.

Monaco Classic Week

The 10th edition of Monaco Classic Week – La Belle Classe has concluded.

A unique event on the circuit and organised in partnership with its official timekeeper Hublot, Credit Suisse, Italian car manufacturer Lancia and the SEPM, this biennial regatta brings together yachts and motorboats of all sizes from the past.

Respect for etiquette, safeguarding the environment and paying tribute to our heritage: these are the key principles behind a label that reaches out beyond YCM members to bring owners together for friendly competitions on the water, followed by a host of parties in traditional Monaco fashion where they can meet and chat in elegant surroundings.

This year there were nearly 100 exceptional boats, including the four remaining 15 M IR yachts, sailing together for the first time in nearly 100 years, and all enjoying superb conditions that brought out the best of the best in each category.

Monaco Classic Week provides a superb showcase for the past in the run up to the Monaco Yacht Show where the boldest innovations and images of what the future holds are to be found.

The two events at both ends of the spectrum add weight to Monaco’s role as the world capital of yachting, one of the wishes of the Sovereign Prince Albert II, YCM president who was very present throughout the event, as was HRH Princess Caroline who welcomed YCM members aboard her motoryacht Pacha III.

Highlight of the week was the sight of the four 15 Metre International Rating yachts racing together, all Fife designs launched between 1908 and 1912 and the only ones left of a series for which only 20 were built between 1907 and 1917.

The competition between these four 15 M was won by Mariska, helmed by Madam Laurence Ramès.

Camer & Nicholsons Marinas to Open Monaco Office

Camper & Nicholsons Marinas (C&N Marinas) is in the process of establishing a base of operations in the Principality of Monaco and has appointed Robert Inwards to run the office.

Inwards has specialised in the sale of premium berths for over 10 years as a Director of Inwards Marine, where he has worked closely with C&N Marinas to conclude several sales, including most recently, the sale of a 60m berth at Port Louis Marina in Grenada, West Indies.

From there he will provide advice on the acquisition or disposal of marina berths worldwide.

His focus will be to showcase the advantages of berth ownership at Grand Harbour Marina in Malta and Port Louis Marina in Grenada, as well as berthing opportunities available at C&N Marinas’ growing portfolio of marinas.

Construction underway of new Mulder Shipyard

Mulder Shipyard’s managing director Dick Mulder has laid the first
foundations of a brand-new facility in the Netherlands, twenty
minutes south of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

The ceremony marked the end of several years of planning on a multi-
million-euro investment situated ten kilometres from the current
Mulder facility.

The new yard will cover an area of 7000 square metres and will
focus on the maintenance, refit and new build of yachts between 18 and
40 metres.

Due to open in 2012, the first new yacht  will be launched there in 2013.

The existing facilities will also remain open and be dedicated to yachts under 18 metres.

The first hall of the new yard will be equipped with two dry docks of 55m x
13m, while the second will allow for four yachts up to 30 metres in length
to be simultaneously constructed.

There will also be a 100-tonne boat lift and a modern office building.

“Although this expansion involves a major investment, we are sure that it
will eventually lead to major cost synergies,” says Dick Mulder. “As well as
new builds and refits, our new yard will also provide services to the
growing fleet.
