Does Your Superyacht Conform to Lightship Regulations

The requirement for checking the lightship displacement and centres of gravity of commercial yachts apply to all LY2-compliant yachts registered with a Red Ensign Flag.  The Marshall Islands and Malta flags have similar requirements.

Mindful that the Isle of Man Ship Registry have highlighted these requirements recently in MSN 037, Manta Maritime have set out a four point plan to ensure superyachts stay within the law

In addition to meeting the legal requirements of the Codes, it is important for all vessels, especially passenger ships and yachts, to have their lightship displacement and centres of gravity measured on a regular basis, to monitor the effects on stability of any weight changes.

Naval Architects at Manta Maritime's have performed numerous lightship checks and inclining experiments, and prepared many superyacht stability booklets for Class and Flag approval.

For each lightship check they undertake to:
  • Perform a thorough survey to establish the yacht's non-lightship items and tank contents
  • Perform a freeboard survey to measure the displacement, trim and list
  • Make a comparison of the results with the information in the existing stability booklet
  • Prepare a report for forwarding to the applicable Flag or Class Society
In the unlikely event that their results show that the stability no longer complies with the legal requirements, they can offer a 20% discount for preparing a new stability booklet.

Superyacht Aviva Visits London

Photograph Charles Howorth
London is a long haul up a river for a superyacht and docking facilities are seldom suitable for the either the yacht or her guests.  This means only the dedicated few bother to make the hike to Englands Capital but one who has done so recently is Aviva the 68 metre built in Germany by Abeking Rasmussen in 2007.

Her interior design is from Reymond Langdon whose offices are also on the outskirts of London.  The same design team are responsible for her exterior styling and it was they who gave her the unmistakable knife edge bow that allows the yacht to cleanly power through the water at speeds of up to 16 knots.

25 crew look after 12 guests who have the ability to move through all six decks in a circular glass elevator the shaft of which permits natural daylight to penetrate through all six decks

Flat Pack Panic Room Becomes Latest Superyacht Accessory

With piracy on the rise, security continues to be a major concern for superyacht owners.  Until recently such areas were seldom installed except on the very largest of yachts and nearly always then during the build process.

Now however the latest accessory available to is a personalised Panic Room that not only can be retro fitted but comes as a flat pack that can be used in locations both ashore and afloat.

Steve Brook, Business Development Director of the Panic Room Company, explains, “Our superyacht clients tend to stock up on multiple Panic Rooms locating some onboard their yachts, others within the summer residence, at the entry gate, in the office or to store valuable art, antiques or arms.

When you consider the modern day backdrop of rising terrorism, cross-border migration and disparity between haves and have nots, it follows that our versatile Panic Room makes effective and economical sense for these high net worth individuals and their possessions.  Panic rooms are no longer a luxury, but a necessity.”

Produced in consultation with senior military experts and police, the Panic Room is a safe, sustainable refuge as a last point of defence and can be specified to withstand mechanical attacks, shotgun fire and more powerful weapon attacks.

Each unit can then be connected to complementary devices such as a simple ‘panic button’ to activate the home alarm system, iPad-2 technology using ISDN or 3G to contact external help or a bespoke computer system able to drive smoke screens or security cameras.

Delivered flat-pack, the Panic Room can be installed in half a day with minimal manpower providing flexibility of use and portability between locations and various size options are available.

The unit can be disguised to unobtrusively blend in with any environment and, although the time spent within is likely to be minimal, the Panic Room is comfortable and sustainable with external ventilation and air filtration, breathing equipment, lighting, back-up power supplies, fresh water and basic toilets all part of the concept.

Whilst it may not draw the same attention as the fancy helicopter or the latest submarine, that security officers consider, the Flat Pack Panic Room looks set to become the ultimate superyacht accessory.

Superyachts Batten Down as East Coast USA Prepares for Hurricane Irene

Albeit slightly weakened, Hurricane Irene now a Category 2 storm is nevertheless making its way toward the East Coast of the United States

Winds of 110 knots are promising wet and windy weekend weather for superyacht Captains in the middle of the New England summer charter season.

Irene is expected pass well off the coast of north east Florida today and approach the coast of North Carolina tonight, and could cross the Mid-Atlantic coast on Saturday night.

Many residents were expected to evaluate North Carolina in advance of the storm.  In Delaware there is a mandatory evacuation of non-residents in coastal areas and residents are being strongly urged leave beach communities to do so as soon as possible.

Up and down the entire US east coast, marina staff working overtime taking boats out of the water.

Potential damage from the storm could be in the billions, some experts say.

US Regulations Again Favour American SuperYacht Captains

Once again US Coastguard regulators  have chosen to keep qualifications needed by US Masters on a different footing to those issued by the MCA and recognised by Red Ensign flags.

Yet again this puts holders of US qualifications at an advantage over holders of the MCA qualifications, already considered by most as being superior.

The MCA fully recognises the US qualification and allows holders to easily obtain a certificate of equivalency so that US Masters may command Superyachts that fly the Red Ensign.

The US Coastgaurd however does not recognise the MCA qualifications in the same way nor does it allow non US citizens to command vessels flying the stars and stripes.

US crews have recently learned that proposals they feared would affect them in the 2011 amendments to the U.S. Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping document appear relatively modest.

The most important of these recent changes mean that the requirement for license holders to be recertified every ten years instead of the five required by the MCA.

Another change is that the timeworn classification able-bodied seaman has been changed to able seaman, either deck or engineering.

Other amendments allow the preservation of the ‘hawsepipe’ program, that permits the use of on-the-job training or practical experience to obtain endorsements and this the Register says, "Would foster career paths that were not previously available”

Following the Federal  Register announcement some captains have asked whether a requirement to recertify the medical person in charge every five years will  include the need to undergo the original weeklong course costing upto £2000 or whether a less expensive refresher course would be accepted

Maritime Employment Law Issues Affecting SuperYachts

John Cook of Lesia Employment Services ICC Limited in Guernsey has written to us drawing our attention to the fact that the UK has recently introduced new laws on discrimination for workers in the maritime industry.

The new law came into effect from 1st August 2011 and is called the Equality Act 2010 (Work On Ships and Hovercraft) Regulations 2011. This new act replaces Section 9 of the Race Relations Act 1976 which ceased on 1st August 2011.

For Captains who have not already done so, John suggests that now is the time to review crew employment contracts to make sure they comply with the new act.

The second piece of news from the UK concerns a First Tier Tax Tribunal held in Aberdeen on the 8th April 2011 in relation to a Double Taxation treaty case for a merchant seafarer.

The case looked at who the economic employer of the seafarer was to determine whether or not a double taxation treaty between the UK and Croatia could be utilised by the seafarer under UK law.

Whilst the case is complex due to the relationships of the various companies involved, the really interesting aspects concerning those operating in the yacht industry are connected with the wording within the contract of employment and the places of business from which the various companies operated.

As this case was only concerned with taxation no reference was made to National Insurance Contribution.  It must be remembered however that the judge's conclusions will also have relevance to UK NIC.

Captains and yacht managers who would like to know about how Lesia can help them should visit the website or contact the at enquiries@lesiagroup.com

Superyacht Style Fishing Hotel Opens Offshore in Gulf of Mexico

The problem many deep sea sports fisherman find is that the fish they want, are generally a long way off shore.

To get to prime fishing grounds many of them have to endure hours of high speed bumpy boat trips to get to where they can settle down peacefully and do what they enjoy doing most.

Go Fishing!

But now, a group of enthusiastic and wealthy sports fishermen have taken an idea from superyacht aficionados and have found what they see as an ideal way to indulge their sport in some comfort and without the need for lengthy transits out to sea and back to harbour each day.

Six years ago they purchased a transatlantic pipe-laying barge. This 117 metre catamaran was towed because it has no engines, to the Dominican Republic where it was put through a multi-million dollar refurbishment.

When it emerged from dry dock it was called Fisherman's Paradise and is now a 36-guest, 4-star floating hotel.

Anchored off the coast of Mexico some 15 miles off Clearwater Beach in Florida, the floating facility now boasts luxury facilities such as:

  • a spa
  • fitness centre
  • cinema
  • swimming pool
  • and helicopter platform for quick and easy transfers.
A marina dock at her stern accommodates five large fishing and dive boats, whose role is to take guests out to prime fishing and dive sites.

Set to open on 9 September, the plan is that the barge will move to other locations in the Gulf and Caribbean where wealthy guests can sample superb fishing and diving.

Shipyard Cup in Boothbay Crowns Whisper as Winner

The 2011 Shipyard Cup ended with an exciting race in light air, as Whisper is the overall winner leaving hometown favourite Scheherazade to take the second day of racing.

The 9th Annual Regatta, staged in Boothbay Harbor, Maine hosted by Hodgdon Yachts welcomed over 250 big boat racing sailors and their guests at the opening event of Shipyard Cup IX.

In the relaxed Maine style the Shipyard Cup the final line-up included:
  • Virago
  • Isobel
  • Christopher
  • Whitehawk
  • Tenacious
  • Whisper
  • Sumurun
  • and Scheherazade.

Under a beautiful Maine sky and fair breezes the Shipard Cup fleet saw day one produce a great day of sailing. After a one hour delay to let the breeze build to a pleasant 10-15kts, the staggered start spread the fleet out over 52 minutes.

The next day when the Sunday breeze built to a solid 8-10kts, first gun at 1300 gave the start to the second and final day of Shipyard Cup racing.  The staggered start saw some early strategy as Isobel followed by Whisper then Virago diverted from the track of the earlier starters in the hopes of finding a lift from the southern tip of Southport Island en route to the first turning mark.

By the time the fleet was headed for home the low cloud ceiling was reducing visibility and the air became very light. The first to emerge from the fog was Scheherazade who led the fleet most of the way to top the honours on the second day.

Hodgdon Yachts President, Tim Hodgdon added:  "This year’s Shipyard Cup was another fantastic event with an impressive fleet of world class sailing yachts.”

Race Organisers announced next year’s Shipyard Cup is scheduled for 10-12 August 2012.

Increasing Popularity Boosts Emerging Thai Boating Market

The seas surrounding Thailand make for some of the most beautiful and uncluttered cruising grounds in the world. This has long been the reason for the thriving boating scene on the country’s coastline

The area has always been popular with forign cruising yachts but now there is evidence of a shift to a more locally grown boating market which is closely correlated to the luxury property market.

Wealthy Asians are now a strong buying force for superyachts. Phuket's status as a renowned yachting destination, thanks to its marinas and exotic outlying islands, could be enhanced through further development of the industry here, and boost the high end property market even more.

The voracity of the local HNW community as well as traditional Western holiday home buyers has increased the demand for luxury villas in Phuket - and for a yacht to go with it.

More boats means more marinas and there are several in planning stages on the island of Phuket.

One of them is an extension at the Royal Phuket Marina, the venue for the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) in March 2012. Nearby Krabi is about to open a 100-berth marina as an extension of their Phuket-based property.

Informa Yacht Group, the organizers of PIMEX (29th March to 1st April 2012) are also seeing this sea-change manifested in the number and quality of yachts booking to be on display next year.

The organisers saw a 47% increase in the on-water display from 2010 to 2011 and a 25% increase in overall exhibitors; 2012 looks like seeing a similar increase.

According to PIMEX Event Director, Andy Dowden in 2012, there will be a number of Asian and World debuts for many of the world’s leading brands;
  • Sunseeker
  • Princess
  • Fairline
  • Monterey
  • Azimut
  • and Prout International.

Turkey Romps Ahead in Superyacht Build League

Turkey now ranks third in the world of superyacht building after Holland and Italy, with a 9 percent market share, that sees them sailing well ahead of many other European countries.

The rating comes as figures are revealed for orders overall in 2010.

Italy tops with a market share of 37 percent, followed by the Netherlands with 11 percent and Turkey with 9 percent.

The country hosts about 300 shipyards yet only 70 produce boats and yachts.

Of these, as few as 10 shipyards in İstanbul’s Tuzla, Yalova and Antalya deal with the production of  superyachts of  50 metres or longer.

Yacht Shows, Market Turmoil & Trickle-Down Economics

As the boat show season fast approaches and superyacht magazines are full of Show previews, Bob Saxon President of IYC in the USA tells us: "Following a stunning summer of activity, IYC has completed 12 brokerage sales—like all in the superyacht business, we greatly anticipate the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

He adds: "Given the remarkable ride on Wall Street of late and watching with a certain kind of amazed fascination the political gamesmanship over the deficit and debt ceiling, I’m encouraging our team to suggest to prospective yacht and charter yacht owners that there is perhaps no better hedge against economic uncertainty than a yacht.

"Moreover, he says, "Pent up demand for yachts and yachting amongst our demographic has never been higher. Gone is the perceived ‘embarrassment of affluence’ of 2008, 2009. In its place is the understanding that owning a yacht puts an entire industry to work.

Saxon reports that: "Chartering yachts is a good strong business and offers those able to afford it seclusion and elegance and a private way to enjoy hard earned wealth.

"Doing business with the large yacht industry works a whole lot better than wondering what next steps governments might take to ensure fiscal prudence.

The Selene 128 Ocean Trawler Yacht

The Selene 128 from Jet Tern Marine is the result of a international collaboration of designers and architects working under CEO Howard Chen's leadership.

He has worked closely with  Dutch designer Guido De Groot and a group of International consultants to develop a contemporary take on the long range yacht whilst capitalising on his company's reputation for experience  in the displacement yacht sector.

Although  taking design elements from the new Selene 92, of which the first yachts are currently under construction, the new yacht is a true 3 deck displacement motor yacht with a sundeck as 4th deck.

She has a modern look with a rather sharp angled bow, giving her together with her round surfaces and stylish feature lines on the side extra elegance and sleekness.

Built in GRP, she will be the longest yacht in the new range.

The lower deck has 2 guest cabins and 2 VIP cabins, which are all en-suite. The crew area is located in the bow of the yacht, and has space for 10 crew.

In the stern of the lower deck there is a technical space and a special area for diving gear. This area is connected to a very large swimming platform.

The spacious main salon is located on the main deck and is directly connected to the aft deck. The round dining table provides space for 12 persons. The galley is situated in the middle of the main deck.

The full beam owners cabin is located in the front-part of the main deck and has a bath, a large shower area and potentially a fantastic view over the water through the large windows in the hull.

The bridge deck has a luxurious full beam lounge with a bar, pantry and comfortable U-shaped couch.

The captains cabin is also located on the bridge deck and has directly entrance to the bridge and the yachts office.

The Portugese bridge leads to the bow, where the foredeck lounge is situated with a large U-couch and a sunbed area.

The concept behind building such a boat is simple - get you there safely and efficiently.

Blended both ABS and MCA requirements for yachts, the builder is creating a solid platform for
enjoying remote destinations with family and friends.

Style, structural engineering, and performance have all been blended to create the perfect Ocean Explorer that makes cruising plans that include longer distances between ports and more varied adventures.
