The Adlard Coles Book of Radar

Radar is notoriously tricky to operate and ‘read’ correctly for collision avoidance either with the land or with other vessels. But used by an informed operator it is an immensely valuable navigation tool especially in poor visibility. GPS will tell you where you are, but it won’t tell you if there’s another boat in that spot!

Rather than taking a theoretical, academic approach, here is book that is practical and hands on complementing the radar owner’s manual and explaining what the operator really needs to know when faced with actual situations at sea.

Packed with illustrative photos, charts and radar screen shots, this book gives guidance from a real life, on-the-water perspective, and will enable readers to solve problems on the spot.

Author Borje Wallin got his first boat at the age of 12, spending summers sailing in the Stockholm archipelago. Having served as mate, chief mate and master of passenger vessels in a 40 year career on the water, he has used his experience to write several books on navigation and seamanship.

Signs of an Improving Superyacht Market

Dutch superyacht builder Heesen Yachts has signed up six new builds in the first ten months of this year making a bold statement that should bring cheer to the industry.

The signing of an order for a 65 metre fast displacement yacht rounds off a successful year for Heesen’s sales department and follows the sale of two 47-Mmetre full-displacement yachts, a 37-metre semi-displacement yacht, and two all-aluminium fully customised builds – one of 50-metres and the other of 35-metres.

Fabio Ermetto, Heesen’s Sales and Marketing Director comments: “Despite the financial crisis that is still affecting the yachting industry, Heesen Yachts has been able to sign six new contracts with a total length of 281 metres. This clearly shows that the financial standing and reliability of our company is highly appreciated by the market.”

Following the positive results of tank tests completed at the Wolfson Unit in April 2010, the company announced its revolutionary 65-Metre concept based on the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) at a press conference during the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

The FDHF is the result of design studies and tank tests carried out over 20 years by the highly respected Dutch Naval Architects, Van Oossanen and Associates.

Construction starts in mid-December 2010 at the Heesen shipyard in Oss, the Netherlands. While the aluminium hull will be manufactured in one shed, the yacht will be fitted out in the dry dock, which will be lengthened by about twelve meters to accommodate it.

Superyacht Wages Unmasked

Understanding the need for addressing who gets what when it comes to wages earned by crew working on superyachts, Fort Lauderdale based superyacht service company Luxury Yacht Group has launched a real time salary statistics tool that can be accessed by those in the superyacht industry worldwide.

As a trustworthy resource for crew placement, yacht management, and luxury yacht charters, Luxury Yacht Group (LYG) is raising the bar by becoming the industry resource with its proprietary salary statistics tool.

Knowing everyone’s need or desire to know what average industry salaries are and with a database of over 50,000 yachting industry members, LYG decided to convert the raw data within this large community, analyze it, and develop a useful tool that provides yachting crew members real time salary statistics.

It tabulates responses from both current crew looking for positions and successfully placed crew candidates on over thirty different crew positions weekly. The salaries, length of experience, size of yacht, and position are all determining factors, which are then communicated to the user through a series of four easy to read graphs charting current crew salaries.

The merit to this tool lies in its authenticity; it is real data from crew members and employers. It is not giving opinions as to how much a stewardess, chef, deckhand, or first officer should make, but what crew are making now depending on level of experience, position, and length of yacht.

New Passenger Yacht Code Will Open up Yachting to MN Officers

A meeting was organised recently, by the PYA and sponsored by the training schools: Bluewater and Hoylake Sailing School  It addressed the concerns of superyacht crews in Antibes during which Captain Roger Towner, Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen for the UK, was emphatic that the MCA is not going to accept the current Master Yachts <3,000 GT deck officer certificates for service on what are becoming called Passenger Yachts.

This means, in effect, that in future deck officers seeking to serve aboard yachts carrying more than 12 guests will have to either take the Unlimited route starting from (U) OOW or be drawn from the commercial sector of the shipping industry.

The proposed new Passenger Yacht Code - colloquially known as the 13-36 Code - is a joint MCA project led by the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry who hope to present it fully at METS in Amsterdam during November.

Bermuda to Get Superyacht Marina

Bermuda will if things go as planned will get its first superyacht Marina some twenty years after it was first muted

As a result of a presentation in July by Bermuda developers Leading Edge Ltd (LEL) of a conceptual design of a marina and hotel followed by several months of discussion the Corporation of St George’s have entered into an agreement with to pursue a partnership and further investigate and develop this proposal of a marina and boutique hotel in the port of St George’s.

The marina, will cater to both local and visiting yachts and the growing superyacht business.  Captain Mark Soares of Bermuda Yacht Services (BYS) has been working with the Corporation over the past two years to expand the super yacht business in St George’s and will assist LEL in this development.

The marina will expand greatly on the facilities that currently exist for the dockage of superyachts in the port.  The new marina will accommodate in excess of 100 yachts and boats.

The idea of a marina near the town centre has been talked about over many years and was part of the St George’s Heritage Plan. The marina will help protect our water side buildings and the town centre which has always been vulnerable to hurricanes. It will move the town forward in offering the facilities that the hundreds of visiting yachts have been requesting as well as providing berths for locals.

Superyachts the Inside Picture

The interior of Kolaha the 63 metre yacht from ISA was designed by Patrick Knowles who has just released a new Web site and pictures of the treatment he has given to the yacht.  Described as “Key West-styled” it incorporates clever use of natural materials featuring tropical influences such as palm wood, coconut shells, hand-carved glass sea creatures, and carved doors convey the feeling of a tropical paradise in every room. Each of the lower-deck stateroom suites features its own theme (Hibiscus, Orchid, Palm and Bamboo) all reflected in the hand-carved wood panels, cabinets, colorful paintings and custom woven carpets, hand-made of wool and silk.

Appealing to all five senses, Knowles has used splashes of soothing colours to evoke the open ocean and lush fabrics offset by warm scents of magnolia and green tea and playful Polynesian music in the air.

A specialty cocktail was even created to give the owners and their guests a truly unique experience. Stunning displays of artwork range from vibrant murals of tropical plants to a one of a kind 30-foot-tall light fixture of Murano glass within the stairwell that connects all three decks.

Externally the design incorporates the owner’s request to have easy access to the sea and the chance to enjoy the open air.  A large sundeck is divided into focus points including a large pool, bar and sunbathing area situated forward, and panoramic seating area with large comfortable sofas to the aft.

The 63m superyacht also offers a beach club area, where owners and guests enjoy the sea. The adjoining garage also provides a wide, open space when the tenders are launched.

New Heavy Duty Mounting Clip for Superyacht Deckheads

Continuing to demonstrate innovative thinking when it comes to mounting deckhead and bulkhead panels in yachts, Fastmount have launched a new surface mount heavy duty male clip

Fastmount, from New Zealand, design mounting clips and devices specifically for the marine industry.  Used by custom superyacht yards, outfitter companies, production yards and commercial shipyards in more than 50 countries. Panels can quickly and easily be removed & refitted in any sequence to exactly the same location time after time.

The new Surface mount Heavy Duty Male clip using super-groove technology, is an extension to their existing system.  Ideal for heavier and larger panels, it is designed for use with thin walled panels and where installers prefer an adhesive fix.  It can be used for pre-finished panels such as composite foam cored panels, honeycomb cored panels & other pre painted panels to be installed.

Compared to alternative adhesive-fix options, the surface mount male clips saves time, reduces errors, and provides an unparalleled secure fit. Specifically designed for strength and flexibility, the small diameter base gives users an wide range of applications.

The super-groove technology used on the base gives users control when applying the adhesive to minimise spread to the wrong places and prevent any glue seepage. Furthermore, the unique design means the adhesive mechanically engages grooves on the base for secure attachment. This enables the user to select the adhesive that best suits the panel and work methods.

Proteksan Turquoise to build Andrew Winch designed Superyacht

Mehmet Karabeyoglu of the Turkish based Proteksan Turquoise Shipyard has announced that Andrew Winch Designs will develop a new flexible 74m motor yacht design for the yard to build

The new yacht will utilise a tested hull platform giving large internal volume which will being offered in two configurations; one a traditional style and the other a more modern approach with sweeping curves.

With the hull well into build and the flexible design package in place, a fast track two year delivery is a possibility. The design package offers further flexibility about where the client wishes to place the owner’s accommodation.

Mehmet Karabeyoglu said ''Although we often use our own in-house design office, we also call upon other well known designers to provide customers with different design approaches, and we also welcome the customers own choice of designer. When I discussed this new 74m project with Stuart Fraser from Fraser Yachts and Tim Wiltshire from Burgess, who were responsible in bringing in the clients for the last two 70+m orders, we decided to call upon the services of Andrew Winch and his team to provide us with a flexible, creative offering and add the strong brand value to the project. With two 70+m projects already in build we again have our dynamic and knowledgeable team ready to market this project and add more in the future.”

The exterior features a long sheer line with a fully glazed window recess in the hull across the guest cabins, resulting in an elegant and sleek signature. In contrast, an option for a stronger look has been designed incorporating a shorter sheer line with longer vertical and individual windows.

The design includes a spa beach balcony and arrival dock, to the stern swim-stair and open beach club terrace.

Within the interior variations provide different client opportunities with the numbers of guest cabins, size of libraries, cinemas, crew numbers/crew cabins etc.  The master bedroom suite is on the upper deck with its own forward balcony and terrace, although it can also be placed in other positions.

A helicopter landing area is isolated to the bow of the yacht, leaving the stern completely clear for leisure, relaxing and entertaining. The wheelhouse deck has a multifunction room at the rear, opening onto a unique inside/outside gym and exercise terrace, alternatively all of this could be the owner’s library.

Brokers Stuart Larsen of Fraser Yachts and Tim Wiltshire of Burgess will handle the sales enquiries

Superyacht Classic Shines at Les Voiles de St Tropez

The 41metre classic Fife schooner Altair has proved she is still a force to be reckoned with on the classic yacht racing circuit. Despite having not raced for 2 years and dashing back from her extended summer cruise in Greece and Croatia, the yacht put in a very solid performance at this year’s Les Voiles de St Tropez regatta, scoring two second places a first and a third.

It’s testament to her versatility that she can comfortably undertake extended cruising all summer, spending the majority of this time at anchor, return for a quick yard stop to complete a Lloyds class survey and immediately sail to St Tropez and achieve 2nd in class.

This stunning yacht remains one of the most genuine and original classics sailing today and is for sale through Toby Maclaurin at brokers OCEAN Independence.

Designers Announce Two New Turkish Built Superyachts

Following their successful long term collaboration with the  Proteksan Turquoise shipyard in Turkey, H2 have developed a new 72m design for the yard.

H2 or should it be just H1 now that Steve Howard is no longer an active part of the team has based their new yacht on the existing 70m platform which the yard is building two versions.  Both with interior and exterior styling from their design studio in London.

The styling is contemporary without being too aggressive and features a large centrally located owners suite on the bridge deck with private balconies port and starboard.

The guest suites are all located on the main deck and there is room for a large spa and beach club and cinema room down on the lower deck as well as a tender garage for two 7m tenders.

Following the launch of three yachts from Proteksan yard , H2 are preparing for the delivery of the 71m Talisman II next year. The second 72m will be delivered early in 2012”.
